DEERFIELD — Following the Pritzker administration’s announcement outlining the transition of residents from Choate Developmental Center, State Senator Julie Morrison released the following statement:
“For far too long, the reports coming out of Choate have been heartbreaking and unacceptable. Every person with an intellectual or developmental disability deserves to live in an environment that is safe, respectful and centered on their individual needs. The decision to close the remaining I/DD beds at Choate is an important step toward protecting vulnerable Illinoisans and ensuring they receive the quality care they deserve.
“As this transition moves forward, we must remain committed to supporting residents and their families every step of the way. That means investing in strong, community-based services that allow people with disabilities to live with dignity, independence and the supports they need in the least restrictive setting possible.
“Illinois has made meaningful progress in expanding community-based care, but our work is far from finished. I look forward to continuing to work with the Illinois Department of Human Services, providers, advocates and families to strengthen our care system and ensure every person with a disability has access to safe, person-centered services close to home.”
